Singles should know

How do you stay grounded in your single season? On the days when bitterness and frustration try to claim your heart and resentment creeps in? It can be so difficult to break out of that line of thinking when it comes, but there are 7 truths that all singles should know to help with this.

These truths will root you in faith by reminding you of who God is, despite your relationship status. We’ve got to make sure we never get into the habit of complaining about what we don’t have. God is good regardless of whether he answers our prayers, right? It’s not always easy to think that way in the moment, but you can always revisit these to help you stay grounded.

Here are 5 truths about God that all singles should know:

God is one who answers prayers.

The Bible says, in 1 John 5:14-15, “… if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us — whatever we ask — we know that we have what we ask.” If God created marriage and has given us a desire to marry (Psalms 139:13-16), then unless we’ve been given the gift of celibacy — it is His will for us to get married. And, If it is His will for us to get married, then all that’s left is for us to know is that He hears us and will bless us according to His will.

God is one who exceeds expectations.

In Ephesians 3:20-21, the Bible says, “Now to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us….” He not only is a God that answers our prayers, but He is also a God that exceeds them! That means we should expect Him to blow our minds! We don’t have to worry about finding the perfect person. God knows what we desire and what we need, and He will supply.

God is one who guards our hearts.

Maybe the reason you’re still single is that the Lord is protecting your heart. In 2 Timothy 1:12, Paul talks about how he is “convinced that God is able to guard that which he has entrusted to Him.” Can you trust that God’s delayed blessing is actually for your good? Can you recognize His involvement in your relationships or lack of relationships as Him guarding your heart? Sometimes it’s difficult to separate our emotions from reality when we feel ready, but God knows best.

God is one who fulfills promises.

When Abraham was given an impossible promise, he did not doubt God’s ability to fulfill it. He hadn’t had any children and his wife was past the typical age for childbearing, yet he believed. God is omnipotent and there is nothing He can’t do. In the moments when you feel hopeless about your situation, remember that you are not the first to face an “impossible” promise!

God is one who gives us the desires of our hearts

The Bible says, “Take delight in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart” (Psalm 34:7)! Believe it or not, God wants to bless us more than we want to be blessed! Singles should know and believe that. The phrase “take delight in the Lord” implies that our joy should be rooted in Him. When you have complete joy in Christ, it gets much easier to wait patiently because He is truly all we need.

Being single has its ups and downs, but if we choose to let the truths of who God is, shape our perspective, hope and peace will help us wait well.
