God speaking to me

Many believers question whether or not God is speaking to them. We can get caught up in thinking that God only communicates supernaturally, when in fact, He can speak to us in several ways.

The Lord speaks to provide us with guidance, correction, and comfort, so we want to be sure we can recognize His voice.

Here are 4 ways that God can speak to you:

1. God speaks through His word.

Yes, the Bible is still communicating the heart and mind of God!

The Lord may lead you to various passages or you might read randomly, but studying the word helps us discern the voice of God. If you believe that God is speaking to you, look for confirmation in the scriptures because He will never contradict His word.

2 Timothy 3:16-17 “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be.”

2. God speaks through dreams, visions, and sometimes an audible voice.

Daniel had dreams, Elijah heard the still, small voice of God, and the woman with the issue of blood had an inner knowing that touching the hem of Jesus’ garment would heal her.

Just be careful when interpreting these supernatural messages. Be sure to get wisdom from your leaders and the word to make sure you’re on the right track.

1 John 4:1 “Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world.”

3. God speaks through people.

God has given us leaders, counselors, and even friends, to help keep us on the right path. He speaks through them to help encourage, warn, and direct us into His will for our lives. Whether it’s a good word or an act of kindness, God will use His people to assure you of His love for you.

Proverbs 19:20-21 “Listen to advice and accept discipline, and at the end you will be counted among the wise.”

4. God reveals Himself through peace.

The Lord doesn’t always answer our prayers with words. Sometimes in life when we feel discouraged, confused, or anxious — and turn to God, He answers us with a sense of peace.

The peace of God is so powerful and reassuring. His presence makes us feel secure that we’ve been given victory and strengthens us to go on.

Philippians 4:7 “And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

So, was that God or just me?

If you’re questioning whether or not God has spoken to you, write down what you’ve heard and then try these methods to gain clarity.

  • Fast & Pray
  • Seek Godly counsel from your pastors and leaders
  • Be consistent in reading God’s word. It will increase your ability to discern God’s voice.

God is always speaking. We just need to make sure we are setting time aside to hear what He’s saying. As you grow in your relationship with Him it gets easier. But, remember that discerning God’s voice is part of your spiritual development process, and it takes time to perfect.
