Dating is one of the most popular ways that couples connect to get to know each other. The typical first date usually includes dinner at a special restaurant with the gentleman picking up the tab. From the moment the couple takes their seats, they get to observe someone that they’re getting to know while they chat and chew. If the chemistry is there, the evening can be an amazing first date together, as the conversation may extend for at least a couple hours. If the chemistry is not there … well, it can feel like a waste of time and money.

A first date of this caliber is typically expensive for the new couple – getting ready (outfit, salon visit, transportation) and the meal. Because this is also very traditional, this format may seem boring for a first date. Also, if the couple prefers not to spend a lot of money on someone they are meeting in person for the first time, they may prefer to do something else.

The key in selecting a great first date activity is the opportunity to talk and get to know someone new with minimal pressure in a fun environment.

Here are some ideas to consider:

1. Picnics — Prepare sandwiches, fruit, drinks, a huge blanket, and all the trimmings and utensils you will need. Find a nice cozy spot, maybe by a pond, or in a park, and spread your fare, sit, and chat. This is a great way to focus on each other in a relaxed, peaceful atmosphere (with minimal cost).

2. Museums — If you are in an area (or close to an area) that has several kinds of museums, you can elect to visit just one, or at least two together. Most museum visits are free or a small fee. Be prepared to walk through centuries of historical artifacts and/or art for hours. Sometimes museums host special tours that attract many visitors. Check your local listings for details.

3. Botanical gardens — If botany is your thing, botanical gardens with various plant and floral features in fascinating displays may be a breathtaking first date. (Just confirm that your date is not allergic to pollen.)

4. Ice cream shops — You may prefer the popular ice cream shops, or you may have a favorite local ice cream shop in your town. Take your date there, sit at a small table or on a bench and enjoy your ice cold treat with conversation and a smile.

5. Local fairs — During the spring, summer and early fall, there are local fairs in many cities. Check your local listings to see the list of entertainment and rides (and foods!) that are available. This is a great way to relive a bit of your childhood while getting to know someone special.

6. Historic location tours — Do you live close to a historical area or site? They typically host tours to educate individuals on the significance of the area or site. Check out estate homes/mansions, or former homes of famous people, or visit a plantation. As you tour and learn about the historical location, get to know your new romantic interest too.

7. Factory tours — These tours will usually show you how something is done or made, for example: touring a chocolate factory, coffee brewery, molded glass factory, or some other place of interest. There is usually a souvenir or sample available at the end of the tour, a nice memoir to remember your first date.

8. Classes — There are so many classes now for almost anything you both desire to learn! There are cooking classes, pottery classes, painting classes, and so much more! Some classes are pricey, so confirm that your date is also interested in learning this skill before reserving your spots. This is a great way to get to learn more about him or her (for example: Are they a great team player?).

9. Skating — Can you both skate or do you have a desire to learn? Skating (ice skating, in-line skating, or roller rink) can be a great way to spend time with someone you are getting to know. If they are adventurous and enjoy physical activity, this could be a fun first date!

10. Miniature golf — Miniature golfing is now a popular way to socialize. Swing some clubs and get to know your date in a comfortable atmosphere. Check out your local spots for details.

11. Sunsets — Drive or walk to a spot where you can both watch the sun set. This is a great setting for a comfortable conversation while enjoying God’s amazing creation. This is free!

12. Beach Walks — Take a stroll on a boardwalk by a beach or walk through the sand together while you talk and take in the ocean air.

13. Hiking — If you and your date really enjoy physical activity, a hike on a local trail may be a great way to connect. Walk and admire the scenery while conversing.

By no means is this an exhaustive list, but these ideas can get you started.

Enjoy your first date!
